Before the 1980s, the homeless population in the United States was comprised mostly of men. Recently, though, the fastest growing group of homeless people in the nations has been single women, many with two or three children. Many of these women have dependency problems.
Fighting addition while homeless is a real issue facing women today. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. In fact, an estimated one in four (25%) women will be victims of domestic violence at some point within their lives. Our desire is to give a hand up to women who are disenfranchised.
Women often sacrifice themselves by repeatedly returning to abusive and oppressive environments upon experiencing homelessness because they have no other safe place to live. Recovery from substance abuse becomes impossible when basic needs, safety, and supportive services are lacking.
Homelessness and lack of sober living increases risks for women including, but not limited to, recurrent substance abuse, HIV risk behaviors, domestic violence and abuse, depression, and a number of other health indicators.
Heart of God Fellowship and Recovery Lighthouse are making a difference. This place of refuge was created to assist with the above issues and to give women a leg up in overcoming their given situation. With our beautiful facility and qualified counselors, each woman has a program tailored to best help her depending upon her needs and situation. Now there is a place of help for these women. With a staff ready to help and waiting to make a positive impact on those women in need, our desire is to continue to be the answer for many who may have nowhere else to turn.
